Toronto Tourism Tendencies: Casa Loma

Casa Loma in Toronto, released under the GNU/FDL

While there are many different castles around the world, there are not that many in North America.  Because of this, a castle is automatically a tourist attraction and even in Europe Casa Loma would probably still be considered a top class tourist attraction; it is just that great a place to visit.

Casa Loma used to be the home of Sir Henry Mill Pellatt; a soldier and financier that is famous in Canadian history.  He was not in the castle very long however, as a combination of high property taxes and high living expenses forced him into bankruptcy during the depression.  Nowadays, however, Casa Loma is a tourist attraction open to the whole public and people that attend the castle find it to be very beautiful inside.

Not only are the furnishings and decorations within Casa Loma top class, but at the same time the artwork and sculptures located within the castle make it a pseud0 museum experience as well as a castle experience and it is this duality of experiences that tends to affect people the most.  Some of the artwork they have here rivals the artwork in the specialist Art Gallery of Ontario.

Casa Loma is Spanish for House on the Hill, and when you drive up to the gates of this storied residence you will see that it is exactly that; a house on a hill.

    Hey Alex,

My memory puts the construction of Casa Loma sometime near the first world war and according to wikipedia it was built from 1911 to 1914, so that seems to check out well.

    Thanks for the comment!

Cool, thanks! It looks a smidge older but hell, I don’t really know much about castles :)
