As You Like It in Toronto

As You Like It in Toronto

As You Like It is one of Shakespeare’s more famous plays and a comedy, believed to have been written by the great playwright sometime between 1599 and 1600.  It has been adapted for radio, film and for musical productions as well and the famous Shakespearean line “All the world’s a stage” is from this very play.

Well, if you’re going to be in Toronto sometime during the next few days, you’ll have a chance to catch a performance of As You Like It April 16th-19th as the ending of a production that started in February looms.

Earth Hour Video

Earth Hour Video

Just to continue with the theme of Earth Hour for one more post, here’s a video I came across on YouTube that I thought was well made. It conveys some of the sense of what happened in some of the city’s major areas during the Earth Hour festivities.

Here’s what some of the major news sources in Toronto had to say about the Earth Hour event that took place last night:
The Toronto Star: City Exceeds Goal for Power Savings
CTV: Thousands Celebrate Earth Hour Downtown
CBC: Canadians go dark with world for Earth Hour
City TV: Toronto Comes out of the dark for Earth Hour
From my personal vantage point in Scarborough (quite a far distance away from the downtown core of the city), it was actually kinda cool seeing all my neighbour’s houses without any lights on.  …read more

With Earth Hour just an hour away now, here’s an official announcement from the Mayor regarding the event:

Another Toronto Protest

Another Toronto Protest

While not exactly the protest capital of the world, Toronto does see its fair share of protests from time to time. With the Olympics fast approaching, the Free Tibet movement in Toronto has become far more vocal than they normally are and one result of that is a protest that took place on the 23rd of March in downtown Toronto. Here is some footage from that event. This is just one of many movements that protests in the streets of Toronto regularly. If I can find footage from some others, I’ll be sure to post them …read more

The Sony Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto is locted at the intersection of Front and Yonge, giving it one of the most ideal locations in the city.  Close enough to the downtown core to attract people from all over the city yet far enough away from it to make great use of the nearby lake scenery, the Sony Centre is one of the most popular performing arts venues in the whole city.  One of their current productions which started yesterday and is ending on Saturday, …read more

One of the things that continue to make Toronto an excellent place to visit is the city’s excellent musical tradition.  There are literally dozens of different musical groups that perform around the city all the time and while I don’t have the time to cover all of them here on The Toronto Traveler, I do try to get to the ones that I think will be of particular interest to you the readers.  This one is the Windermere String Quartet which happens to be just one of the many different smaller musical groups …read more

Henna decoration is big in Toronto, perhaps due to the large number of naturalized South Asian citizens that we have living here.  Henna decoration is a big part of the culture in countries like India and it’s ended up making its way into the Toronto culture as well, with Henna tattoos and paintings featuring largely in a number of different places as you walk around the city.  With more interest in this style of artistic expression, the Textile Museum of Canada has decided to help those interested learn how to get in the know …read more

Many people have undoubtedly heard of Finger Eleven already, especially if you happen to be into the alternative rock genre of music.  Even if you’re not and you’re looking to expand your horizons a bit, the musical performance of Finger Eleven that’s coming up tomorrow is a pretty good way to do that.  They’re an all-Canadian band as well, which perhaps adds to the flavour of the performance for people that are viewing it from out of country.
